In memoriam: Alan Limbrey
It is with the greatest of sadness we anounce that Alan Limbrey, one of the founders of the Sussex Nomads and a total gentleman, passed away on 26 February at 94 years of age.
Alan began racing with The Prestonville Nomads in Brighton in 1948. He stood out at both regional and national levels as a top racer for many years. He and the late Geoff Boore founded the Sussex Nomads in 1973 to encourage their racer friends to enjoy Sunday club runs on the quiet lanes north of the Downs.
For more about Alan’s early days with the Nomads read about the history of the club here.
Alan continued taking part in club runs well into his 80’s. Several of us remember him riding in the “track taster” at Lee Valley velodrome at the age of 85!
Even after he could no longer cycle Alan was an enthusiastic supporter of the club, turning out at major club events like the annual Ditchling Beacon Hill Climb (in which his great-grandson Noah Stepney has won top Junior honours in the last two years).
Those who knew Alan will never forget his vigorous spirit and humility. He was truly the last of a generation of cycling nobility.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, 11 March at 11 a.m. at Downs Crematorium, Bear Road, Brighton BN2 3PL, and a remembrance reception afterwards at The Rotunda, Preston Park, Brighton, BN1 6HN
