Ride Leader Policy

Purpose

This policy outlines the responsibilities and expectations of Ride Leaders within Sussex Nomads Cycling Club. It aims to ensure safe, inclusive, and enjoyable group rides, while supporting Ride Leaders with clear guidance and best practice. This policy should be read in conjunction with the Ride Etiquette Policy.

1. Role of the Ride Leader

Ride Leaders are volunteers who guide and manage club rides. Their responsibilities include:

  • Planning and communicating the route, pace, and duration.

  • Welcoming riders and conducting a pre-ride briefing.

  • Managing group safety, cohesion, and enjoyment.

  • Responding to incidents or mechanical issues.

  • Ensuring no rider is left unsupported.

Ride Leaders are not expected to be first aiders or mechanics but should be prepared to coordinate assistance if needed.

2. Before the Ride

Ride Leaders should:

  • Choose a route appropriate for the advertised group level.

  • Share ride details in advance via the club’s communication channels.

  • Check weather and road conditions.

  • Carry a mobile phone, emergency contacts, and basic tools.

  • Encourage riders to bring suitable kit, including spares, hydration, and clothing.

3. At the Start

Ride Leaders should:

  • Arrive early and identify themselves to the group.

  • Welcome new riders and assess any concerns.

Brief the group on:

  1. Route overview and key hazards

  2. Expected pace and regrouping points

  3. Communication signals and etiquette

  4. Rider emergency contacts – check availability on the lock screen of rider’s mobile

4. During the Ride

Ride Leaders should:

  • Maintain a consistent pace suitable for the group.

  • Monitor group cohesion and adjust as needed.

  • Use clear hand signals and verbal communication.

  • Stop safely for mechanicals, incidents, or regrouping.

  • Adapt the route if conditions change.

Riders are expected to follow instructions, ride predictably, and support one another.

5. After the Ride

Ride Leaders are encouraged to:

  • Ensure all riders return safely.

  • Share feedback or concerns with the committee.

  • Thank participants and promote future rides.

6. Safety and Risk Management

Ride Leaders should:

  • Be familiar with the club’s generic risk assessment.

  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments during the ride.

  • Avoid hazardous junctions and busy roads where possible.

  • Ensure group size is manageable (ideally ≤8 riders per group).

  • Split larger groups with staggered starts if needed.

7. Incident Reporting

  • In the event of an accident or serious issue:

  • Ensure the safety of all riders.

  • Contact emergency services if required.

  • Notify the Club Secretary or Welfare Officer.

  • Complete an incident report if appropriate.

8. Support and Development

The club will:

  • Provide mentoring and route planning support for new Ride Leaders.

  • Maintain a register of approved Ride Leaders.

  • Offer access to British Cycling and Cycling UK resources.

  • Review this policy annually.
